Jerez strengthens its commitment to flamenco as an essential pillar in its bid to be European Capital of Culture 2031

Renowned cultural manager, Romanó scholar, and Roma activist Joaquín López Bustamante delivered the “Respect Flamenco” Manifesto today in defense of flamenco and Roma culture. This is how the city of Jerez celebrated the central event on International Flamenco Day (November 16), commemorating the date of the inscription of this essential heritage of Andalusian, Roma, and Spanish culture on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Cabildo Viejo in Jerez was the setting for this commemorative event, which was attended by the mayor of Jerez, María José García Pelayo, members of the local government and the Municipal Corporation, as well as the president of the Local Federation of Flamenco Clubs, Jesús López, artists, flamenco experts, and representatives of the cultural association network.

Thus, the reading of this Manifesto was conceived as “an opportunity for all of us to reflect on how we should respect, care for, promote, and disseminate flamenco” and as a fundamental pillar for the #Jerez2031 bid for European Capital of Culture in 2031.
