The Deputy Government Delegate in Cádiz, Blanca Flores, met with the Mayor of Jerez, María José García Pelayo, to discuss the Cádiz municipality’s bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2031.

The European Capital challenge is a one-year designation that, following approval by the European Commission, will be awarded to one city in Spain and one in Malta in 2031. The strategy presented by Jerez, which was presented this past Tuesday to 18 representatives of the province’s towns and cities at the Cádiz Provincial Council, includes addressing the candidacy from the perspective of the province, connecting not only its history, its identity, and its natural and monumental heritage, but also its rich and diverse cultural tradition.

At the same time, the meeting addressed the upcoming constitution of the #Jerez2031 Governing Council, which includes the participation of Jerez City Council, the Cádiz Provincial Council, Chambers of Commerce, and the University of Cádiz, as well as the candidacy presentation ceremony scheduled for July 18 at the La Atalaya Museum in Jerez.
